Tattoo Removal
Laser tattoo removal: Lasers are focused beams of light directed onto your skin. Lasers heat up the ink particles in your skin to break them down into smaller particles, which are easier for your immune system to remove. It can take multiple laser therapy sessions to remove a tattoo.
Laser is a very safe, superficial treatment, with very little risk of any long term problems/scarring etc. However, there are some circumstances where you would not be able to be treated.
Pregnancy – it is not possible to treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Sun exposure – recent sun exposure, and particularly if you have current tan on your skin.
Fake tan – as this puts pigment on and into the surface of the skin, so you would not be able to be treated if you have fake tan products on your skin.
Sunbeds –there is significant research to show that these are potentially very dangerous, by raising your chance of developing melanoma, so the use of sunbeds is not something we would advise you to use. We would not treat your skin if you had used a sunbed in recent weeks, particularly if you have active tan on your skin.
Medications – some medications can cause increased photosensitivity (causing your skin to react more in the sun) If this is the case, we would not be able to treat you until you have completed the course of the medication and it is fully out of your system. In the case of Roaccutane, we would not be able to treat for at least 6 months following the last dose taken. You must stop any acid-based products such as Glycolic and Salicylic at least 1 – 2 weeks before each treatment.
Laser treatments are not suitable when you have active infections or inflammations, a viral/fungal/bacterial disease, active cold sores, open lacerations or abrasions in the treatment area.
Before your procedure, you’ll meet with a trained, certified beautician who’ll evaluate your situation and inform you about the process. They’ll evaluate your skin and may ask questions that could include:
- When did you get this tattoo?
- Have you undergone any prior tattoo removal procedures?
- Was the tattoo was applied by an amateur or professional?
Your provider will also measure the size of your tattoo and they might take a photo of it to record the results of your procedure. Your provider will choose a treatment plan based on the type and color of ink in the tattoo and the depth of the tattoo pigment in your body.
During a laser tattoo removal procedure, you can expect the following to happen:
- You’ll wear protective eye shields.
- Your skin’s reaction to the laser is tested to determine the most effective energy for the treatment.
- The treatment itself consists of placing a hand piece against the surface of your skin and activating the laser light repeatedly (pulse) over the surface of the tattoo.
Smaller tattoos require fewer pulses and larger ones require more. In either case, the tattoo requires multiple visits for treatments. After each treatment, the tattoo should become lighter.
After each session, your licensed beautician will give you instructions about how to take care of your skin.
Laser tattoo removal carries risks and potential complications like any medical procedure. You will discuss these risks in further detail during your consultation, plus how to minimise these risks. Some of the possible risks and complications associated with laser tattoo removal include:
- Pain and discomfort: Laser tattoo removal can cause pain and discomfort during and after the procedure. The sensation is often described as similar to being snapped with a rubber band on the skin.
- Skin discolouration: One possible complication is temporary or permanent changes in skin pigmentation. Some individuals may experience hypopigmentation (skin lightening) or hyperpigmentation (darkening) in the treated area.
- Scarring: While rare, scarring can occur due to laser tattoo removal. Scarring is more likely if proper aftercare instructions are not followed, or the treated area becomes infected.
- Infection: There is a risk of infection associated with laser tattoo removal, mainly if the treated area is not kept clean and protected. It is essential to follow the post-treatment care instructions provided.
- Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the tattoo ink or the laser treatment itself. This can manifest as itching, redness, swelling, or a rash. Allergic reactions should be reported immediately.
- Textural changes: Laser tattoo removal may result in skin texture changes, such as raised or depressed areas. These changes are usually temporary but can be permanent in rare cases.
- Blistering and crusting: It is typical for the treated area to develop blisters or crusts following laser tattoo removal. These are part of the normal healing process and typically resolve independently.
Shave the area 24 hours prior to treatment. Ensure no fitted clothing is worn on the area where the tattoo is being removed. We suggest arriving with loose fitting clothing to prevent rubbing or irritation after treatment.
Topical Anaesthetic (numbing cream) can be applied to numb the surface or body part prior to treatment.
Bring along an ice pack if needed - this helps significantly to numb the area before treatment and helps with swelling during the treatment.
Please ensure you are arriving to your appointment on time. Our Salons are very busy so we can only allow a grace period of no longer than 15 minutes. If you are more than 15 minutes late, we will have to cancel your appointment and you will have to reschedule.

Do not exercise for 24-48 hours post a treatment. The area will feel slightly tender post a treatment. So the last thing you want to do is aggravate or hurt the area.
Avoid excessive heat to the skin. Whilst it is ok to shower 2 hours after a treatment. Please avoid high-pressure hot showers. Or soaking in a bath or sauna for at least 24-48 hours afterwards.
Make sure to keep the area clean and dry during the healing process. A mild soap can be used. And make sure to pat dry and do not rub.
Do not expose the treated area to the sun. If you must be in the sun for work or any other reason, then please make sure to use a good sunscreen. We recommend - ASAP daily moisturiser 50+sunscreen for extra protection from the sun, keep the area covered up with clothing.
It is quite common to get blisters after a treatment. No cause for concern here as. It is all part of the healing process. Blisters are a sign that your immune system is healing the area. And removal of ink has started. Let the body break the blister down naturally. As we don’t want to cause scarring or infection. And apply bepanthen which is available in your local chemist, Or an antibiotic ointment after the blister has popped. Be sure keep the area covered up for added protection.
For pain relief, you can take Paracetamol. It is best to AVOID Aspirin. Aspirin can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
Do not pick or scratch at the treated area. This is important as we do not want to scar the area. Or cause infection.
Try to avoid shaving until the area has completely healed.
If the treated area has that slight sunburn feeling, then cool compress can be used to ease discomfort.
The area may get itchy as it continues to heal. This is all part of the healing process. To ease the itchiness, apply 1% hydrocortisone cream or a Vitamin E ointment.
HEALING PROCESS
Complete healing takes 6 to 8 weeks. It may seem like the surface of the skin has healed in a few weeks. However, the deeper layers of the skin is still healing. This is why we wait at least 6 weeks before the next treatment.
Your immune system plays a huge part in the healing as well as the ink elimination process. Give your immune system a boost by getting rest. Drinking plenty of water and eating healthy.
How the Tattoo Removal process works
Tattoos are no longer permanent in the Gold Coast, all thanks to the power of lasers. Lasers now work at a frequency that can avoid your top layer of skin and hit these large particles of ink directly. When it hits them, it breaks them into smaller pieces. When you’ve broken them into small enough pieces, your body can flush them away naturally and the tattoo is gone. That’s why it can take several sessions—some tattoos average 8 and 12 treatments to remove a tattoo completely. It’s your body working in tandem with the laser to get rid of the ink. Each time a layer of ink is removed, the tattoo gets lighter. This process does not destroy any of the normal surrounding skin tissue. Your tattoo is harmlessly dissolved over time. Frequently asked questions about Laser Tattoo Removal
Any body area can be treated with the Picosure laser, provided it is deemed a suitable treatment area by your laser technician.
This treatment is often described as “like a needle prick,” a “fling from an elastic band,” or worse. Every client will process the pain differently. However, we use a cooling system that effectively cools the skin before and during the treatment. We also recommend using a topical anaesthetic to numb the area before treatment to further minimise discomfort.
A significant reduction and, in most cases (but not guaranteed), a complete tattoo removal.
Removing the tattoo effectively will take a course of treatments, provided your technician has advised that this is likely.
Every case is individual and depends on the tattoo (size, colour of inks used, intensity, etc.) and your skin tone and texture.
A complimentary consultation is the best way to determine your required treatments.
The following people are not suitable for Laser Tattoo Removal. Anyone who:
- Has sunburn on the face, neck or décolletage
- Has eczema, dermatitis or severe telangiectasia
- Has had anti-wrinkle injections within the past 24 hours and filler injections within the past two days
- Has a healing tattoo on the treatment area
- Is currently pregnant or breastfeeding
Your therapist will confirm your suitability during the consultation process.
Depth:
Ink is injected into the dermis, below the skin, making it harder to remove.
Ink particle size:
Larger ink particles are harder to remove. Traditional laser tattoo removal can be used to shatter ink particles making them easier for the body to remove, however, the remaining ink particles are often still too big, even after multiple treatments.
Colour:
Blue and black pigment are easy to treat, other colours such as reds and yellows can be difficult to remove.
Skin tone:
Darker skin tones are harder to treat with other lasers. This leads to reduced effectiveness while increasing the risk of injury. Picoway can treat all skin types and tones.
This will depend on numerous personal factors, such as the size of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo and the colours of the pigments. You will need to discuss a personalised treatment plan after having your tattoo assessed by one of our technicians during a consultation.
The best way to minimise the risks of your laser tattoo removal treatment is to closely follow your personalised list of recovery instructions one of our team members provided.
Scarring is a rare risk if proper aftercare instructions are not followed.
